Why Ball Compression Is Half the Fitting

Compression rating describes how much a golf ball's core deforms on contact. A low-compression ball (roughly 30–60) deflects easily and needs less clubhead speed to spring back off the face; a high-compression ball (90 and up) needs real speed behind it to compress at all, or it simply doesn't transfer energy efficiently. Neither is objectively "better" — the only thing that matters is whether the rating lines up with the speed you actually swing.

Pair a 90+ compression tour ball with an 82 mph swing and the core barely deforms at impact, which quietly bleeds ball speed the same way an over-stiff shaft does. We measure your clubhead speed on the impact bay first, then hand you a compression band — not a single ball recommendation, a range — so every club fitting that follows is built against a ball you'll actually be playing.
