Making Sense of a Shaft Spec Sheet
Four numbers show up on nearly every shaft spec chart, and none of them explain much in isolation. Read together, they map directly onto the same speed axis that drives ball compression — which is why we check both at once.
A Guideline, Not a Guarantee
Flex letters look standardized — L, A, R, S, X — but manufacturers don't build to a shared tolerance for any of them, so an "S" from one shaft line can play softer than an "R" from another. What flex actually describes is how much the shaft bows and releases through the downswing, relative to your own speed and tempo, not a fixed physical value.
Go too soft for your speed and face control at impact gets unpredictable, along with excess spin. Go too stiff and you can lose feel entirely, never quite loading the shaft on the way down.
Three Construction Types, Three Trade-Offs
Steel
Runs heavier and holds tighter tolerances between individual shafts, which is why it stays the default in irons and wedges among players chasing precise feedback.
Graphite
Trims mass to add clubhead speed for players who need it, while cutting vibration at impact. Default in drivers and fairway woods, and gaining ground in irons for players carrying slower deliveries.
Composite Blend
Pairs a graphite body with a steel tip section to keep steel-like feedback near the head while shedding overall weight — an expanding category in iron shafts.
Flex and Compression Are Reading the Same Signal
Shaft flex and ball compression both exist to answer one question: how fast are you actually delivering the club? They just measure the answer on different halves of the collision. A player swinging 78 mph and a player swinging 108 mph don't only need different letters on the shaft label — they belong on entirely different shelves of the ball rack too.
That overlap is why we take a single speed reading at the top of a session and put it to work twice: once to shortlist shafts off the wall, and again to shortlist ball models off the rack.
