How Ball Compression Actually Works

The number printed on a sleeve of balls gets thrown around constantly, and misunderstood almost as often.

Ball compression describes how much a golf ball's core deforms when it's struck — measured, historically, by pressing a ball between two plates with a fixed amount of force and recording the deflection in thousandths of an inch. Manufacturers convert that deflection into a rating, usually somewhere between 30 and 110, where lower numbers mean the ball squashes more easily and higher numbers mean it resists deformation.

What Compression Is Not

It's a common mix-up: compression is not a measure of how hard or soft a ball feels off the putter face, and it's not directly tied to the ball's cover material either. A low-compression ball can still have a firm-feeling urethane cover, and a high-compression ball can wear a soft-feeling cover. Compression is specifically about core deflection under load, which mostly comes into play on full-speed shots — not around the green, where cover material and dimple pattern matter more.

Why Compression Matters Most at High Speed

At low swing speeds, a ball's core barely deforms regardless of its compression rating, so the difference between a 60-compression and a 90-compression ball is small. As swing speed climbs, the difference widens: a properly matched ball compresses efficiently and springs back with more of the impact energy converted into ball speed, while a mismatched ball either over-compresses (losing energy to deformation it doesn't fully recover) or under-compresses (never loading enough to spring back efficiently at all).

Compression only becomes a meaningful fitting variable once swing speed is fast enough for the mismatch to show up in the numbers — which is most golfers, more often than they'd guess.

How Manufacturers Actually Report It

Compression ratings aren't standardized the same way shaft flex letters aren't — a "90" from one manufacturer's testing method can differ slightly from another's. That's part of why we test physical samples on the bench rather than relying purely on published numbers when building a compression band recommendation.
